Certified translation
The translation of foreign documents must be created in the form of a certified (official) translation for submission to German offices and authorities. In Germany, certified translations can be prepared only by sworn translators, who are appointed by Regional Courts. Certified translations are typically required by authorities like Civil Registry Office, Youth Office, Foreign Registration Office and other German institutions, such as universities, banks, local authorities and courts. On a certified translation, the translator attests that the target-language text is an accurate and complete translation of the source-language text. Certified translations bear the translator’s signature and official stamp. Certified translations can be made both from the original document and from the certified copy. A corresponding note will be made on the translation certificate.
Sworn translator
Sometimes a simple translation is not enough. It needs to be a translation that is approved and sealed by the German authority. By German law, only a sworn appointed translator for the language in question may deliver a certified translation. Sworn translators in Germany are translators, who have taken an oath at a local or regional court. They have a duty of confidentiality and must faithfully and dutifully translate the written text into another language. For many official documents that need to be handed over to a local German authorities, translations often need to be done by a sworn translator. These certified translations have to be approved with the translator’s official stamp. The stamp must include the translator’s name, language(s) and address.
Apostille
An apostille is a special form of notarial certification in the international authentication procedure. The apostille certifies the authenticity of a public document, signature or stamp. The process of authentication is called apostilisation. The apostille itself is a stamp or printed form consisting of ten numbered standard fields. At the top is the text Apostille, under which the text “Convention de La Haye du 5 octobre 1961” (French for "Hague Convention of 5 October 1961") is placed. This title must be written in French for the apostille to be valid. In the numbered fields, the following information is added, which may be in the official language of the authority that issues it or in a second language. Before placing the order, please inquire at the relevant foreign offices (especially embassies or consulates), whether an apostille is required for your document.
